Personal account of an exciting open-air free festival in A Coruña, Galiza, NW Spain. Thanks Damon for throwing water at me and at all the people in the front rows!
I arrived late to the town of Oleiros, and ended up parking near a striking Che Guevara roundabout. Thousands of people were already watching the festival on the Santa Cristina beach. Im afraid I missed many performances, including those of Chinese star Sa Ding Ding, Uxía, and Triángulo de Amor Bizarro.
Very soon after reaching the front, I saw that Damon Albarn was sitting discreetly and watching the show. He grew more and more enthusiastic, and a surge of emotion came with his wistful intro to an Amadou and Mariam song. Mariams childlike voice was moving. After that, Albarn played a synth and added deliciously fun touches to many groove-based acts. Several rappers added a lot of fun, but at times they slightly overstayed their welcome.
The best moments came in a double serving: first when, to my disbelief, I saw that long-admired Led Zep bassist and Arranger John Paul Jones played bass on Elíades Ochoas "Chan Chan." Mariam improvised and everyone enhanced that haunting Cuban masterpiece.
The second emotional shock was seeing the mythical Clash singer and guitarrist MIck Jones join Amadou and Mariam, Ochoa, Amparo Sánchez and others in a version of "Rock The Casbah" crazily sung by Rachid Acha, whom I didnt know. He and Albarn seem to be great friends. The crowd chanted along and it was fantastic - the only quibble being that Jones bass was too low in the mix, so his splendid runs were little heard.
It felt poignant to know that probably many people would not be aware of the stature of both Joneses, for example. But I didnt know many of the international acts, which are maybe legendary too in other parts of the world.
An energetic Femi Kuti ended the festival with his sharp Positive Force band, and three good-looking backup singers who marvel

?"Jumpin Jack Flash" is a song by English rock and roll band The Rolling Stones, released as a single in 1968. Called "supernatural Delta blues by way of Swinging London" by Rolling Stone,[1] the song is seen as the bands return to their blues roots after the psychedelia of their preceding albums Between the Buttons and Their Satanic Majesties Request.[2] One of the groups most popular and recognizable songs, "Jumpin Jack Flash" has been featured in many films and on the Rolling Stones compilation albums Through the Past, Darkly (Big Hits Vol. 2), Hot Rocks, Singles Collection and Forty Licks .
?Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, recording on "Jumpin Jack Flash" began during the Beggars Banquet sessions of 1968 (although it was not released on that album). Regarding the songs distinctive sound, guitarist Richards has said:
I used a Gibson Hummingbird acoustic tuned to open D, six string. Open D or open E, which is the same thing - same intervals - but it would be slackened down some for D. Then there was a capo on it, to get that really tight sound. And there was another guitar over the top of that, but tuned to Nashville tuning. I learned that from somebody in George Jones band in San Antonio in 1964. The high-strung guitar was an acoustic, too. Both acoustics were put through a Philips cassette recorder. Just jam the mic right in the guitar and play it back through an extension speaker.[3]
Richards has stated that he and Jagger wrote the lyrics while staying at Richards country house, where they were awoken one morning by the sound of gardener Jack Dyer walking past the window. When Jagger asked what the noise was, Richards responded: "Oh, thats Jack - thats jumpin Jack."[4] The rest of the lyrics evolved from there.[3][5]
Jagger said in a 1995 interview with Rolling Stone that the song arose "...out of all the acid of Satanic Majesties... Its about having a hard time and getting out. Just a meta
