Coley and his brothers grew raised with his mother in Oakland, California, after his parents divorced when he was five years old. His mother adored music and the Lord, and their house was filled with gospel, classical, and jazz music. Coley began to play the piano and woodwinds after being inspired by the music that surrounded him. When the Edwin Hawkins Singers’ modernized gospel sound of “Oh Happy Day” became a big pop success in 1968, Coley became particularly passionate about spiritual music. He started performing with the well-known gospel ensemble Helen Stephens & the Voices of Christ when he was 14 years old. Throughout high school, he continued to include music into his classes, but he stopped performing in order to attend college. Coley studied business but dropped out in 1977 after landing a stable job with the Edwin Hawkins Singers. It was the first in a string of CDs that catapulted Coley to fame as a financially successful and critically renowned gospel singer.
